“The suspects can be expected to appear in the Daveyton Magistrates Court after a preliminary investigation is concluded,” said Capt Alfred Nakana.
According to EMPD spokesperson Wilfred Kgasago, the looting of foreign-owned shops took place last night.
And authorities suspect the looting could have been committed by criminal elements posing as concerned protesters.
“As the looting took place, many residents tried to protect some of the foreign shops from being attacked,” said Kgasago.
The arrests follow tense protests by Daveyton residents, demanding that the Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality address their demands to occupy vacant land, near Mayfield Square.
Protesters proceeded to block main roads leading into Daveyton, with rocks and garbage material.
Two meetings are scheduled for the week, one on Thursday and a Ward 70 meeting on Sunday.
“The meetings will discuss the way forward and address protesters’ complaints, such as the return of confiscated building material removed from the land,” said Kgasago.
