UPDATE: Protesters claim land is theirs

Protesters claim the land in Daveyton, near Mayfield Square, is theirs and that protests will continue until the Ekurhuleni Metro Municipality addresses their concerns.

Community member Mzwandile Fukade said Daveyton community members were issued with certificates in April, last year, from Ekurhuleni town planners, stating that they could build on the land.

However, according to Ekurhuleni spokesperson Themba Gadebe, the disputed land is earmarked for residents in the Chief Luthuli Park N12 highway settlement.

The residents were removed from Bapsfontein because of the disastrous situation in area.

“This land was identified as per the instructions of the Constitutional Court, to accommodate the Bapsfontein relocates,” said Gadebe.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality’s (EMM) human settlement department had received a complaint on August 12, about the illegal invasion of land on the following properties – Daveyton 73-IR, Ptn 266, Putfontein 26-IR and Erf 4547.

“Councillors and the office of the executive mayor organised a meeting with the leadership of the invaders on August 13, to address the matter peacefully,”Gadebe added.

“The leadership of the invaders stormed out of the meeting as they could not agree on certain issues with regards to the invasion.”

The Red Ants were then given instructions to monitor the land and end further invasions.

But invasions continued, as invaders marked and demarcated their individual spaces using stones, plastic and small sticks.

“Some invaders attempted to construct shacks, but the Red Ants intervened and material used to mark and demarcate spaces were removed daily,” said Gadebe.

The EMM is currently taking legal steps to prevent the land invasions.

The area has previously seen several protests with regards to issues of housing.

  1. issue of Daveyton community should be on the table. We(Mayfield Extensions has nothing to do with their strikes for land issue. how can an individual/s just occupy an area with live cables(electric) and main water pipes.

a dumping site , agricultural area for the community, churches and roads as new stands…its impossible. every ward has borders…so y if they need land they also take over our area….mayfield is for us not the…we r going to use our new mall soon no one should …either claim or stop us.
