Saints downed at Currin Park

Coach Ray Cloete’s Old Bens first football team’s aim to earn promotion from the ELFA Super League Seniors Division Two, to Division One is progressing well.

Following a bye the previous weekend, Cloete’s men welcomed Bedford Saints to Currin Park, on Saturday, May 17.

Both teams started well, with some intense play in the middle of the park.

It was midway through the first half when the Old Bens players started getting on top of proceedings and, after winning a number of corner kicks, it was a magnificent left foot drive in the 24th minute from Mohammed Brant that opened the scoring for the home side.

He turned a Saints defender inside out and hit a 20m screamer.

Not even 10 minutes later, Bens’s Happy Thipe swivelled in the penalty box and buried a great shot into the corner of the net.

The second half saw both teams attacking hard, and good saves were required from both sides’ glove-men.

In the end it was Cloete’s Old Bens who bagged all three points, with the 2-0 win.

This is the team’s fourth undefeated game in a row, with three wins and a draw.

The Man of the Match was Dale Skinner, who produced a strong display.
