Homes and shops searched to find python

The Oakfields Shopping Centre and surrounding homes were searched today in an attempt to locate a missing python.

According to the snake’s owner, Mark McGill, the snake has still not been found and he is now relying on people to come forward with information.

The 3.8m-long albino Burmese python was reported missing today (April 16) from Titan Reptiles.

McGill, who is the shop’s owner, said the reptile escaped after being placed in a new cage yesterday (April 15).

McGill is now concerned that someone might have picked the snake up with the intention of not returning it.

He said the reptile is worth about R5 000 to R6 000, although he said the snake is worth much more to him.

The owner said the snake can go without food for about a year, although he feeds it frozen still-born piglets or rabbits approximately every month.

People took to the Benoni City Times Facebook page after the news of the missing snake broke.

”Don’t make a mistake, a snake will never in its life be tame,” said Anre Viljoen.

”It’s only docile, meaning it will bite and constrict if it feels it is in danger.

”So, if you don’t know anything about how to handle it or how to work with animals, then don’t try your luck, rather get someone who knows what he/she is doing.”

Michele Klemp said: ”Shocking the people still think it’s ok to keep these animals as “pets”.

”It’s not only irresponsible but also cruel!”

Elaine Mortimer asked: ”Has it been found yet, as I have two small dogs down the road and I am now incredibly worried about this snake not being found!”

Another reader commented: ”I agree Michele,” said Leilani Kermis.

”Thank goodness it’s not a venomous snake that will just strike.

”He is probably hiding somewhere but I would hate to be the one to come across it.

”And I won’t be going to Oakfields today.”
