East Rand United’s football team was very popular at the time and when Dave van Niekerk tucked home the equalising goal in a 3-3 result against Florida at Dunswart Stadium there was great relief among the team’s supporters. In 1968 football players were tough as nails. Just ask East Rand’s right half Wally Walker who played most of the game with a bandaged head after sustaining an early injury.
