Benoni Pole dancers partake in Guinness world record attempt

On Sunday, February 22, pole dancers from all over the world attempted to break an existing Guinness World Record, for the most people pole dancing simultaneously across the globe.

Two of the four pole dancing studios in South Africa, in association with the International Pole Sport Federation (IPSF) participating in the attempt, were the Anti-Gravity Pole and Aerial Dance Studio Studio and Pole Physiques Studio, from Benoni.

The existing record the dancers attempted to break is 206 dancers in 26 countries, who completed the exact same routine at the exact same time and raised over 50 000 pounds for Cansa.

They started at exactly noon and completed a set six-minute long routine, showing off their advanced skills in pole fitness.

Representing Pole Physiques Studio was Benita Bouwer (founder and owner), Chantal Hall (instructor), Carla Vieira (student), Frances MacMahon (student), Franchesca Botha (student), Lance Hastie (student), Melissa Steenekamp (student) and Peta Houston-McMillan (student).

TheAnti-Gravity Pole and Aerial Dance Studio team consisted of owner Candice Storm Baker and instructors Vannesa Mendoza, Stacy Wilde, Carol Beukes, Lisa Labuschagne and Mandy Campbell, all instructors at the studio.

“We really appreciate Ryan Manthe from Health and Fitness of Trinergy and Sharon Gordon of Lola Montez for supporting our attempt,” she said Candice.

Candice is positive that the record will be broken this year, because, she explained, over 845 dancers from 100 dance schools all over the world participated in the event to raise funds for Cansa this year.

Pole Physiques Studio told the City Times it will take months to decide whether the record has been broken but they are positive that it has.

Anti-Gravity Pole and Aerial Dance Studio have chosen to support the “Animal Cancer Trust” and Pole Physiques Studio chose “CANSA for Breast Cancer (Type A) Research as their project”.

Benita said the attempt consisted months of preparation; including learning the sequence, deciding on a suitable dress code, making sure sound checks are in place and administration procedures.

She said they are honoured to support another worthy cause.

“Our studio slogan is Passion, power, pizazz… whether it be on or off stage,” Benita added.

Both studios told the City Times that the event is stricktly organised and judged.

The IPSF, is using this opportunity to help promote the World Pole Sports Championships (WPSC).
