Police arrested for the disappearance of a Nigerian man in Western Extension

The two police officers accused of assaulting, suffocating and disposing of a Nigerian national have been arrested.

The officers from the Brixton SAPS, aged 31 and 32, were arrested this morning (January 28), following investigations by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).

Benoni police spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele confirmed the arrest of the two officers.

“They have been charged with kidnapping and will be appearing in the Benoni Magistrates Court on January 29,” said Sekele.

At this stage, it is not yet clear whether the CCTV video footage from neighbouring properties, thought to have captured the incident, might have contributed to the arrest of the officers.

Nigerian Theddeus Duru (52) was last seen on Friday, January 17, after the two Flying Squad members from the Brixton police allegedly went to his house, beat him up, suffocated him, loaded him into their car and left.

The incident occurred at around 10am, on a property situated at the intersection of Turvey Street and Elston Avenue.

A group of Nigerian men then marched to the Benoni police, to demand “justice” and to deliver a memorandum, on January 20.

Representatives from the Nigerian Embassy also visited the Benoni Police Station on January 27, to enquire about the matter.

    Well done.

  3. Dear CCTV…. Those cameras were installed and monitored by CMS Security. They were installed in order to watch drug activity at 26 Turvey. As much as I regret the fact that good SAPS members have been arrested, the cameras were installed with good intentions. So, CCTV Idiot !!! What would you rather have?? Nigerians or Cameras !!! After all, how many other SAPS members are on camera accepting money and chatting to drug dealers?? Quite frankly, SAPS should have known better then to do stupid things in full view of the cameras. Pity !! I most certainly would give them a “Bells” for knocking off one of the drug dealers.

  4. It is with sadness that I read this article. Two policemen face charges and the drug dealers enjoy the freedom of Benoni. Has the CCTV footage had any drug dealers arrested? Would be interesting to know.

It is so easy for you to make a statement about the idiots that have installed the cameras in Turvey Street. My question to you CCTV is do you live in Turvey street, if not let me explain a few things to you.

Read the article and ask the questions, the cameras are there CCTV to help try clear up all crime in Turvey Street. If you believe that it was a stupid thing to do please feel free to move into one of our homes and live the way we have had to and then we can discuss the cameras. I am sure that as upset as you are that two policemen have been arrested, you can appreciate that we will be over the moon when these cameras start cleaning up the streets.

CMS and these cameras are the only hope that we have are living a normal life.
