City’s fleet management affects service delivery – Councillor Bill Rundle

“In many instances, it is the changing of a tyre, the replacement of a battery, repairing a side mirror or a light that is needed."

Ward 19’s Alderman Bill Rundle has raised concerns regarding the level of service delivery not only in Edenvale but across Ekurhuleni.

According to Rundle, who is also the Shadow MMC of Roads and Transport, one of the contributing factors for service delivery deterioration is to challenges faced by the city’s fleet management workshop division.

He said departments across the city are affected.

“There are large shortages of rolling staff and vehicles, which leads to departments such as EMPD not being able to transport personnel or other departments not being able to transport material or equipment,” said Rundle.

“There is a knock-on effect on service delivery as staff, material or equipment cannot be transported to sites.”

He said many of the city’s vehicles are out of commission and in for repairs.

From the information he has received, many of the repairs are allegedly minor.

“In many instances, it is the changing of a tyre, the replacement of a battery, repairing a side mirror or a light that is needed. These are roadworthy matters,” described Rundle.

Rundle said Edenvale’s EMPD offices are meant to have at least 18 operable vehicles. On October 31, he said only two were functional

“Regarding the Water and Sanitation Department, approximately 30 vehicles are meant to service Edenvale but only eight are operational.”

He said the energy department was affected by the fleet crisis but somehow managed to respond to matters.

Rundle said the Parks Department, which is meant to have 12 grass-cutting units, are all non-functional.

He said that the city’s fleet management workshop division has been run by an acting operational planning manager for several months while not having a quality control officer.
