Local Sadag launches free online mental health support group

People living with trauma, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex Post-Traumatic Stress (C-PTSD) can start accessing Sadag's online support services from December 14.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) is launching a new free online support group for people living in Kempton Park and the surrounding areas.

The group aims to assist those living with trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and complex post-traumatic stress (C-PTSD).

Sadag will launch the support group on December 14 at 18:00, thereafter the meetings will be held weekly on Wednesdays at the same time.

Jane Mashava of Sadag said people living with PTSD and trauma often experience intense, re-occurring and disturbing thoughts and feelings that relate to an experience or experiences from their past, sometimes long after the traumatic event has taken place.

She said they may feel alone and even helpless.

“There is help available. Being part of a support group allows you to engage and connect with people who are going through similar things. Support groups offer a place of warmth and comfort without the fear of being judged,” she explained.

One of the support group leaders explained how important it is to be able to talk about and share one’s thoughts, feelings, and experiences with others who have also lived through trauma.

Stating that opening up about one’s experiences can help to process what has happened.
