Creating joy with his music

“It all started when I joined the school choir. My love for music then continued into my adult years. I also used to sing a cappella with my coworkers.”

Driven by a passion for music, Lucas Morudu thrives for recognition in the music industry.

With his unusual stage name of Joyvoy, which used to be his late grandfather’s middle name, the 35-year-old Makholong Section musician frequently stuns the crowd.

“My late grandfather was Lucas Voyi Morudu. I fell in love with the name Voyi because it brought me so much joy. As an artist, I became creative and came up with my stage name,” he said.
His musical career started during high school.

“It all started when I joined the school choir. My love for music then continued into my adult years. I also used to sing a cappella with my coworkers.”

Joyvoy said South African artists such as Zola 7 and the late Mduduzi Edmund Tshabalala, commonly known as Mandoza, inspired him to never give up on his dreams.

Despite his hectic schedule of live concerts, the father of two still finds time to be with his family.

“I prioritise my time. Studio work never takes precedence over family time and my family always comes first in all I do.”

As a result of the experience he gained throughout his music career, he was able to work with and feature a variety of musicians and record companies, particularly those from the Thembisa community.

He collaborated with musicians such as Paragon, Black Fairy and Fraddy Boosta, as well as record labels Plug Entertainment, 1632 Records, ZZZ Records, Dream Star Records and others.

With the guidance and support of his producer, Monde Kama, JoyVoy successfully produced an extended-play (EP), called Mnike Lechance, with Thabang Letlojane, popularly known as Inert the DJ, which is presently accessible from digital retailers.

The EP was produced with the hope of encouraging and helping Thembisa’s recovering addicts to take part in community initiatives and keep them away from drugs.
