Lifelong passion for music paying off for Edenvale resident

“I was 12 years old when I told my dad that I wanted to quit school and rather learn how to play instruments and how to make melodies come together.”

Dowerglen resident and aspiring artist Eljoenai Cica (AKA King El Joena) has harboured a passion for music for as long as he can remember.

Born into a musical family, singing was always a part of the 27-year-old’s life.

“I started rapping in 2005 alongside friends. Although times were tough, we would rap together.

“We recorded several songs, sharing emotions and what was happening in the community.”

Growing up, Eljoenai spent many years watching and listening closely to his uncles who would sing.

The musician, who said was influenced by the Gospel genre, described himself as a passionate artist who followed his dream.

“When I was younger, I wanted to study music. I wanted it so bad that I did not want to do anything else.

“I was 12 years old when I told my dad that I wanted to quit school and rather learn how to play instruments and how to make melodies come together. I wanted to inspire some of the other children.”

Despite his passion, Eljoenai’s father made him continue with school.

During his time in high school, Eljoenai started performing.

“Seeing people and friends’ reaction and appreciation for what we had to offer drove me to continue on this musical path with much more passion.

“I told myself that I can do this and so I had to do it. It was almost the dumbest decision I made, but now I believe it is the smartest one. I grew into it and it is my piece of art and my greatest achievement.”

Eljoenai said when he first started pursuing a career in music, his group of friends would work together to help each other.

“We had no equipment but during the school holidays we would record at a friend’s house. We would then use the song to perform at local events that were hosted in the area where we lived.”

Since leaving high school, Eljoenai has produced several songs, released his album titled Far From Home and worked with various other artists.

Today, Eljoenai focuses on producing hip-hop and urban music.

“I would say I’m a conscious rapper but I’m into everything music-related.”

Eljoenai said although he draws most of his inspiration from God, he is also inspired by his own experiences and things happening in society.

He believes those who would enjoy his music the most are those who enjoy the hip-hop culture.

“I have a lot to share with fans and there is a lot to learn from my music.”
