Edenvale rapper hopes to provoke thought

Edenvale resident and rapper Anold ‘Turb’ Sibanda is on a mission not only to entertain fans but to provoke thought.

The 21-year-old CBD resident, who found his passion for music at a young age, recorded his first song in 2013 and has since gone on to produce several others.

“Back in Zimbabwe, my mother used to sing at the church and one day she encouraged me to sing.

“The response from the congregation was amazing, it was great to hear them cheer for me.”

In 2016, Anold and his mother moved to South Africa while his father stayed in Zimbabwe.

“I wanted to come to SA to master my art and become better at it, but my father didn’t know I wanted to pursue a career as a rapper, he wanted me to study.

“When my dad found out he was not cool with it all, but he has come to terms with my decision to pursue music.”

Anold said the decision to pursue a music career in SA stemmed from the lack of opportunities in Zimbabwe.

“In Zimbabwe, it is much harder for a new artist to make a name for themselves, so I moved to SA to create a brand as a solo artist.”

Anold described his music as a fusion between rap and singing.

He said his music has evolved since he first started.

The lyrics he writes are generally written from his own life experiences and those others around him have gone through.

“When I started producing tracks it was all about entertaining people. Now I try and make people think about what is going on in their life.

“I want people who listen to my music to reflect on things in their life and to elevate their minds.”

In the next few years, Anold hopes to elevate himself in the music industry as his social media following and fan base grows.

When he started focusing on his music, Anold had to take several jobs to help out at the time.

“Looking back, I think if I had believed in myself a bit more and focused on my music I might be on a better level than where I am now.”

In the months to come, Anold is set to work on an extended-play (EP) with a Nigerian artist.

Once that is completed, he hopes to focus on his solo career.
