National Arts Festival hones Mashilo’s skill

He performed his piece Fifty Thousand Words of Confession, a one-man show that addresses social issues.

Joburg East artist Bonginkosi Mashilo performed at the National Arts Festival, which was held from June 27 to July 7 in Grahamstown.

The festival has become a highlight on the South African cultural calendar and is known as one of the biggest annual celebrations of the arts.

“I have always loved the festival and what it stands for. It’s open to all, regardless of race, colour, sex or creed,” Mashilo told the EXPRESS.

“There is no censorship or artistic restraint imposed on works presented at the festival.”

He said performing at the festival was an important part of his artistic journey.

“I wanted to share my craft with the world and other artists,” said Mashilo.

He performed his piece Fifty Thousand Words of Confession, a one-man show that addresses social issues.

“I have grown creatively by finding new ways of telling stories and better ways of making the audience relate to what I am trying to express. My emotional intelligence as an actor, director and a writer has grown,” said Mashilo.

He said the festival also teaches artists to appreciate the diversity of people and offers a platform to learn from others, whether it’s through their work or during conversations.

“I met people from across the globe. We shared meals, shelter and our love for the arts.”

He said the festival has a lot to offer to young artists because of the diversity of talent.

“I had the chance to improve on audience development techniques. I came back from the festival a better artist,” said Mashilo.
