After the four-vehicle pile-up in Modderfontein, the NEWS asked Shawn to elaborate on what is the first thing community should do if they find themselves involved in an accident.

Netcare 911 responded to reports of a collision on Modderfontein Road in Edenvale at 3.16pm on Monday afternoon, March 4.

Shawn Herbst, media liaison of the Netcare 911, said reports from the scene indicated that four light motor vehicles were involved in the collision.

“The patients were assessed on scene by medical personnel and found to be in a stable condition.”

“One occupant was transported by another private ambulance service to a hospital for further assessment,” said Herbst.

After the four-vehicle pile-up in Modderfontein, the NEWS asked Herbst to elaborate on what is the first thing civilians should do when involved in an accident.

“Think safety. Continuously re-assess the safety of the scene. Put on your hazard lights to alert other drivers.

“If your vehicle is still drivable, pull over safely and switch off your car,” said Herbst.

Herbst added that it is a good idea to position an emergency triangle about 45m from the accident site to warn oncoming traffic.

“Call emergency services and give them your name, number, location and details of the accident, including the number of people injured, if any.”

“Take note of damage to vehicles as well as the surroundings; if possible take photos of all the damage to all the vehicles as well as the entire scene.”

“Ask others involved in the accident, as well as any witnesses, for their details.”

“Also record the registration and licence numbers of other vehicles involved in the accident,” said Herbst.
