Add length, volume or colour to your hair

If you’re active and wash your hair quite a lot, you need to make sure not to just start scrubbing your scalp and hair. By doing this you could land up damaging your extensions.

Whether you are lengthening your hair, increasing its volume or adding a few coloured streaks, hair extensions need a little extra care.

If you’re active and wash your hair quite a lot, you need to make sure not to just start scrubbing your scalp and hair. By doing this you could land up damaging your extensions.

Below are some dos and don’ts to keep your extensions in tip top shape:

Dos

• Do take extra precaution when throwing your hair up. Make sure your extensions are not visible.

• Do try clip-ins for a safe alternative to the needle and thread. Easy to clip in, easy to take out.

• Be prepared to spend extra time doing your hair in the morning. It’s going to take more time to dry your hair and it’ll take longer to comb out. You’ve got to make sure you take care of it.

• Do avoid salty or chlorinated water. Salt and chlorine harm your hair extensions just like they harm your natural hair.

• Make sure the colour of the extension that you pick is the right colour, otherwise the whole purpose will be defeated.

Don’ts

• Don’t brush your hair like you used to. If you’re not gentle, you can cause breakage. The extensions will tangle easier than your natural hair so you will need a good comb so you don’t end up with dreads underneath.

• Don’t style your hair without protective products. Just because it’s synthetic or hair that’s not yours, it needs to be taken care of. Use a heat protector before reaching for your flat iron so you don’t damage your extensions.

• Don’t use any oily products, especially at the top where the extensions are bonded to the hair. Stay away from serums or anything greasy, as those will break down the bond of the extension.

• Don’t use just any brush. Choose a detangling brush with nylon bristles that allow you to comb through the hair without pulling.
