The 411: Preparing for an interview

All this information will increase your confidence and prepare you to ask and answer pertinent questions during the interview.

Before you go to an interview, it is important to do research about the company that you are applying to.

This will give you a head start over the rest of the candidates. You can do this by consulting the following sources:

  • Obtain a copy of the annual report of the company and study it carefully.
  • Study any articles or reports published in newspapers about the company.

You should also prepare yourself for typical questions that might be asked during the interview. By preparing yourself beforehand, you will reduce your stress and avoid anxiety during the interview. The best procedure is to write the questions and your appropriate answers on a sheet of paper and to practice them with someone you trust.

Remember to dress appropriately in neat, clean, professional clothes. Arrive five to 10 minutes before the interview. Sit and relax or practice your relaxation techniques. Avoid talking to other candidates as this could lead to anxiety. When it is your time, enter the room walking up straight.

Greet everybody present in a friendly manner. Sit up straight and look enthusiastic.

When the time arrives for you to ask questions, ask pertinent questions to help you gain more insight into the specific job you have applied for. These questions can be prepared beforehand and you can even take the list to the interview.

The intensity of the interview may make you forget to ask some important questions. By checking the list you will add to the impression of efficiency and thoroughness which you want to create.

The types of questions to ask are:

  • What are the chances of promotion and how does it take place?
  • How did this position become available and will there be an opportunity to speak to the employee who is leaving the position?
  • What are the working hours?
  • Does the job involve travelling?
  • Would the job involve paid overtime?
  • Does the job involve a production bonus or incentive scheme?

Remember that when you ask these questions you should try to relax and listen to answers from the panel.

Try to link some of your work experience to the aspect under discussion. Practice relaxation techniques. These will help you to relax and lower your heart and pulse rate.
