What you need to know about reflexology

Applying pressure to specific areas can provoke definite physiological reactions in their corresponding organs or areas of the body.

Reflexology is a combination of art and science in a proven and effective foot massage therapy that falls under alternative and complementary medicine.

It is considered holistic and aims at helping the whole body and not just the feet.

Reflexology is used primarily for relaxing tension. It promotes the body’s ability to adjust and balance during times of stress. Simply taking time out to relax can help you let go of tension and enjoy a feeling of restored balance in your mind and body.

Beyond relaxation, reflexology has been shown to improve poor circulation. Improving circulation boosts the supply of oxygen and nutrients to your muscles and other tissues and speeds the elimination of waste products such as lactic acid and stress hormones.

This, in turn, reduces stress, muscle tension and soreness, decreases healing time for injuries and reduces swelling from injuries or illness. It also improves poor circulation problems such as immune function, skin tone and the ability to concentrate.

Why can reflexology be painful?

A reflex may be painful if your body is out of balance.

Meridians are energy pathways that connect the reflex regions on the feet to the specific organs on the body.

If these pathways are congested, your body will not be able to maintain a perfect homeostasis and therefore certain reflexology points which represents the said point can be painful.

Applying pressure to specific areas can provoke definite physiological reactions in their corresponding organs or areas of the body.

Reflexology cannot make any condition more acute. It helps nature to normalise body functions.

A reflexology series decreases the stress that can affect your health. It is a safe effective way to better health. In fact, it can also help sore feet.

It is almost impossible to maintain your body in a state of absolute homeostasis which is why reflexology would be helpful no matter how many times you attend treatments.

Reflexology shows greater benefits from attending treatments more frequently such as once a week for 10 weeks as opposed to once a year, if you intend on having reflexology treatments for an extended period of time the two-week gap between treatments is sufficient after the first 10 treatments.

A reflexologist may suggest that you have a check up on a specific part of your body or refer you to a specialist but a reflexologist may not diagnose by any means.

A reflexologist may also never hand out a medical script or sell pharmaceuticals.

A reflexologist cannot claim to cure or heal a disease as it is a holistic therapy which does not isolate a disease and treat it.

Reflexology rather helps a person’s state of mind, body and spirit in order for the body to heal or help itself.

It does not work in a specific area or problem but rather on the whole body.
