After-hours animals talk features gerbils

While gerbils are seldom seen and are pretty small, Mr Grube’s research has turned up some interesting facts about them.

The Modderfontein Conservation Society brings something completely different to its April evening talk with an illustrated presentation by society member Peter Grube, entitled, “AHA Moments with Gerbils”.

The meeting will take place at the Modderfontein Town Hall, 1 Casino Road, at 7.30pm on April 20.

This is the first in a series of talks centred around cute creatures who come out at night, or After Hours Animals (AHA).

While gerbils are seldom seen and are pretty small, Mr Grube’s research has turned up some interesting facts about them.

Gerbils, for instance, excavate burrows in sandy soils during the night.

The fresh ramp of newly turned soil around the base of small bushes and grass clumps tells you there’s a gerbil around.

One can often see some rubbish at the burrow entrance, which shows that gerbils keep a clean house and put the rubbish out nightly.

Grube is an entertaining speaker. Anyone who heard his talk on coin conservation last year will not want to miss his AHA talk.

Visitors are welcome to attend.

An entrance fee of R30 is charged to help cover expenses.
