Sama award winner releases new music

Nomisupasta is taking on theatre and music and she told City Buzz all about it.

Born Nomsa Mazwai, this local songstress has won a South African Music Award (Sama) after finding music at a young age and growing her talent over the years.

“There used to be a popular television show called Jam Alley. My sisters and I used to imitate this show at home. So, I started singing from a very early age,” Nomisupasta explained.

However, it was in 2010 that she was truly inaugurated into the local music industry after winning her first Sama award for her self-titled debut album.

“I found that people like my alternative and Afro-soul sound, so when I released the full album in 2016, I included all the songs I had recorded at the time that fit into that sound. I have many musical influences starting from choral music, Celine Dion, Stimela, my sister [Thandiswa Mazwai], the Brand New Heavies, Norah Jones, Offspring and Bjork.”

Now a regular performer at various Johannesburg venues including Bassline, The Orbit jazz café, Constitution Hill, as well as others across the country, Nomisupasta is joining the Soweto Theatre team as general manager and she’s excited.

“The Soweto Theatre team is incredible. Each member comes with a wealth of experience and I am learning every single day.”

Along with managing the theatre, this local star will also be promoting her two new bodies of work this year.

“I have two new albums. One is called First Contact by Nomisupasta and Nezbeat. It is dubstep and lounge music. The next album is light, fun, the perfect summer rooftop party music. I am always working on new music. I have a new song out with a Ghanaian rapper called Cupids Crooked Bow. People should listen to it and watch the music video, which was shot in two African locations and it’s completely #Supa.”
