According to legend, the first carnation was created from the tears of the Virgin Mary when Christ was crucified.

These flowers are a symbol of the labour movement and a mother’s love in most countries of the world.

Carnations symbolise bad luck in France, where they are mostly used for funeral bouquets. The natural colour is purple-pink.

Today you get them in all kinds of colours due to humans doing selective breeding.

White carnations will change their colour after adding food colouring to the water. This can happen after 24 hours.

Each colour has a specific meaning. White represents purity, yellow represents disappointment, pink is for a mother’s love, red represents true love and purple represents capriciousness.

Carnations also have long lifespan in the vase. They can remain fresh up to 14 days after removal from the ground.
