Local artist exercises body and mind

JOBURG – An artist must be versatile in life and in the music industry, and we interviewed one such artist.

Local artist, Liza Monageng embodies the full package and exercises both mind and body.

She is image conscious and is also dedicated to her craft.

This paper interviewed Monageng and discussed health, music and all that comes with it. “Keeping a healthy diet is very vital to everyone, especially artists who are expected to perform,” she said.

“As a performing artist, it’s important for me to be fit because being onstage takes a lot out of an artist. You can’t go onstage and after one minute you’re tired and out of breath and your voice sounds horrible, so you need to take care of yourself.”

Monageng is very hands on – she is not only a vocalist but also a manager of a band. She added that it’s important as an artist to be well informed about the industry. “I am managing a band right now and the experience has been nothing but eventful, fascinating and exciting.”

She is also a member of a choir called Sounds of Jozi (SOJ) which she said has helped her in gaining vital skills. “The skills I have gained from the choir have groomed me as a solo artist. SOJ is an incredible choir and there’s a lot of talent, but what I have learned the most from this choir is patience and, of course, a work ethic and more depth into music… so I’m very grateful to have found a family outside of my own. It makes my fire burn more and more.”

As a full figured artist, she takes her image seriously and said it’s important for any artist to be comfortable in any outfit. “I don’t really think that there are specific do’s and don’ts to follow for any body size, as long as you feel comfortable and you look presentable. The biggest mistake us girls make is dressing for people to have an opinion about us on what we wear, and that actually really doesn’t matter – if you don’t respect yourself, then others won’t respect you anyway.”

Monageng is currently preparing for an upcoming performance and said rehearsals are going according to plan so far. “I’m a bit nervous due to the fact that this is my very first solo gig, but I’m excited,” she said.

She will be perform at Ram Jam on 30 October.
