Prevention and treatment for ageing hands

The hands are usually ignored in the average woman's skin care regimen and thus often give our age away before our faces do.

Beautiful, youthful-looking hands are always attractive.

Many of us forget, though, that a youthful appearance is not only judged upon the condition of the face, neck and décolleté, but also the condition of the hands.

Our hands do just about everything and since our hands are exposed to multiple external factors most of the time, it results in visible signs of ageing more than other areas of our body.

These ageing signs include age spots, thinning skin, enlarged veins and a bony appearance.

The hands are usually ignored in the average woman’s skincare regimen and thus often give our age away before our faces do.

With the advent of photo rejuvenation of the skin and dermal filler treatments, virtually any patient can be a candidate for a little brightening of the skin and improved structure on the back of their hands.

The advice is to start with collagen stimulatory devices early so as to prevent the deterioration of skin texture and laxity, as well as treating or preventing the ‘bony and veiny’ look on the back of the hands, as one gets older.

Both prevention and treatment of ageing hands is possible with the availability of a number of safe and effective treatments.

  •  Topical treatments

It is always a good idea to look after your hands in combination with effective topical products.

As we all know a medical grade sunscreen is vital to prevent further UV damage.

It isn’t always necessary, unless for a particular purpose, to purchase products only for your hands – but using your anti-ageing facial products (depending on what you are using) after applying to your face is an easy, quick and less expensive way to rejuvenate your hands.

  •  Dermal filler treatments

To instantly refresh old-looking hands with enlarged veins and a bony appearance, dermal fillers can add volume and plump up the skin on the back of our hands. The hyaluronic acid present in the fillers attracts water and rehydrates the skin for a period of 18 to 24 months.

An added benefit is that new collagen formation is promoted for more long-term beneficial effects.

  •  Medical laser or peel treatments – skin rejuvenation

As ageing hands are a multi-layered problem the use of medical laser and sometimes specific medical peels are necessary to complete the result and maintain that youthful appearance we all look for.

These treatments assist tremendously in repairing and ridding the skin of pigmentation and sun damage, as well as improving the quality and hence look of the skin – making it smoother and more supple.

Also, especially in winter, it can help reduce dryness and prevent cracking of the skin.

Each patient’s requirements are different, and hence the treatments plans are adjusted accordingly.

Having youthful, healthy-looking hands is now possible.
