Clean hands can save a life

Dr Robyn Holgate, from ER24, said hand hygiene is the best way to prevent the spread of infection and disease.

Global Health Professionals Hand Hygiene Day took place on May 5.

This day was announced by the World Health Organisation (WHO).

Celebrating 10 years since the launch of the WHO Clean Care is Safer Care programme and the seventh year since SAVE LIVES: Clean Your Hands campaign, the organisation articulates that hand hygiene in healthcare has saved millions of lives.

Dr Robyn Holgate, from ER24, said hand hygiene is the best way to prevent the spread of infection and disease.

“It is evident as to why hand hygiene has become a growing factor when it comes to decreasing the susceptibility to disease. Mediclinic and ER24 have highlighted the significance of clean hands in minimising infections and introducing better healthcare,” said Dr Holgate.

In supporting the value of patient safety, each Mediclinic hospital received posters, stickers, as well as alcohol hand rub bottles in acknowledgement of the event, Hand Hygiene Day.

According to Yolanda Walsh from Mediclinic, hand washing is critically important in preventing the spread of gastro-enteritis and other communicable diseases in the community.

The result of regularly washing hands ultimately produces enhanced health and reduces the chances of spreading diseases that are related to lack of hand hygiene.
