Editor’s Christmas message

In the fast-moving world of digital media, there is little time to reflect. We move forward, always intent to stay ahead of reporting relevant and local news.

The growth of digital media has resulted in more people from a wider audience accessing our news – forcing us to always achieve excellent journalism.

Newsrooms reflected the changes in the media industry, including the EXPRESS and Bedfordview and Edenvale NEWS newsrooms.

This year we welcomed back our former senior journalist, Brian Mchunu, who has embraced his new role as the face of the news for the Joburg East Express.

His work is complemented by the articles written by Buli Sonqishe, who has several years’ experience writing for an online women’s magazine, a general news online magazine and an online business magazine.

This team has, since they joined the EXPRESS in last quarter of 2014, contributed to the steady growth of the EXPRESS’ online presence.

The digitally-minded journalists currently serving the Joburg East EXPRESS and Bedfordview and Edenvale NEWS audiences, under the online editorship of Charmaine Slater, will continue to bring our readers more local and relevant breaking news in 2015.

One of the EXPRESS’ most successful projects in 2014 was the Joburg East EXPRESS and Hirsch’s Spelling Bee competition.

Kensington Ridge Primary School pupil, Kondwani Kapisa, was the winner of the inaugural Spelling Bee competition.

The competition was spearheaded by Joburg East Express branch manager, Mr Chris Mcinga, and was one of the first events to be held under the auspices of Caxton to promote literacy. The competition aimed to expand children’s horizons beyond the classroom and enhance their process of learning.

As we look back at the numerous articles written and published by the EXPRESS in 2014, we realise you did not always agree with that which we chose to report on and in some instances expose.

We don’t expect you to always agree with our decision to publish. If we’re fostering debate, initiating community engagement and encouraging decisions which will lead to a better community, then we consider ourselves to have done our job.

In closing, I wish each and every one of our readers happiness and joy this Christmas and New Year

Thank you for your loyalty in 2014. Your news team looks forward to bringing you all you need to know in 2015.
