Top teams take trophies

Bedfordview Last Man Stands (LMS) hosted its third season final prize giving at Jeppe Quondam on March 29.

The event aimed to recognise the top performing players and teams for the summer league, which ended in early March.

Co-owner of the Bedfordview and Edenvale LMS franchises, Claude Oosthuizen, said the last two seasons have seen an increase in players wanting to be part of the fastest growing form of cricket worldwide.

During this past summer season, the Bedfordview LMS franchise attracted players from Johannesburg East, Benoni and Alberton.

“Bedfordview LMS reached a milestone of 40 registered teams in only 18 months and we are looking at a possible 50 teams in the next summer season,” said Claude.

He added that while LMS cricket is played year-round, generally the winter season sees a drop in registrations.

“For the upcoming summer season, we will be playing at four grounds; Jeppe Quondam, Elandspark School, Dawnview High School and the Modder Sports Complex,” said Claude.

He added that as a franchise, Bedfordview LMS was keen to also introduce a women’s league.

“For the summer 2014 league, we will also introduce a summer corporate league on Thursday evenings which will be open to any company and can be used a tool for team and spirit building,” said Claude.

At the awards, Old School 1 took top honours in Division 1 when the team walked away as league winners while in Division 2, the honours went to Rockafellas.

Blood Sweat and Brandy took home the league title for Division 3 as well as the Knockout Championship trophy.

It was the first time in Bedfordview LMS history that a league winner also took home the trophy for the Knockout Championships.

Knockout Championship winners for Division 1 were the Green Mambas, while Deadbeats took home the Division 2 title.

Division 1 individual awards went to Matthew Smit from the Cricket Guru’s for being the best batsman, Richard Barley from the Green Mambas for being the best bowler and Sandone Minnie, also from the Green Mambas, for being the best wicket-keeper.

In Division 2, the award for the best batsman went to Sahne Glover from Old School 2, while Andre Shultz from the DreamKillers walked away with the title of best bowler and Rui “Gummi” Geronimo was awarded as the best keeper.

Justin Downs from the DP Boys walked away with the title of best Division 3 batsman, while the award for best bowler was given to Leeroy Erasmus from Blood, Sweat and Brandy. The best wicket-keeper award was given to Thesen Pillay from the DP Boys.
