Bedfordview residents Donna Tutton, Guy Carter and Richard Tandy took part in the 2014 Dusi Canoe Marathon that took place from February 13 to 15.

The race, a 120km canoe marathon stretching from Pietermaritzburg and ending at the Blue Lagoon at the Durban beachfront, saw 775 boats taking part.

Donna Tutton, from Bedfordview, partnered with Kwa-Zulu Natal-based paddler Eloise Van Gysen to finish 171st out of 775, with an overall time of 11 hours and seven minutes.

They were also the 12th female boat to cross the finish line.

Guy Carter and Richard Tandy, from Bedfordview, paired together and finished 135th, in 10 hours and 43 minutes.

“Having trained hard throughout 2013 to prepare for the challenge, numerous paddlers from the Ekurhuleni area successfully finished the race, although one pair were cheerfully rescued by helicopter when they were stranded on an island, having lost their broken boat which washed away in the strong river current,” said Jennie Dallas from the Gauteng Canoe Union.
