Dumped sand causes frustration

Residents are furious over a sand dump that has yet to be removed in Bruma.

The sand dump is believed to be a contributing factor to crime in the area.

The sand was apparently dumped near the old Bruma Flea Market by a developer in 2011.

Ms Valda Gossmann, from the Bruma Residents’ Association, said the association was informed that this would be a temporary arrangement for six months.

“In October 2011, Bruma residents complained about air pollution, dumping, environmental damage, health problems and so forth. People passing the dump have been attacked and in some instances, women were raped,” she said.

Last year the EXPRESS reported that the dump was attracting illegal activity and was an eyesore.

At the time, Clr Alison van der Molen, of ward 118, said not all the sand was allowed to be dumped there.

She said she was informed that permission was granted to store a third of the sand that is on the site, but this was not adhered to.

According to Clr Van der Molen, she was told the intention was to store a third of the sand which would be used as a backfill for Bruma Lake during its conversion into a free flowing lake.

The rehabilitation of the lake is only due to start in March.

Early last year, Clr Van der Molen said people were using the area to dump other garbage.

Last week Ms Gossmann said she reported the problem to the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) but nothing was done.

Instead, the dump is larger and more unsightly.

“Who is accountable and what are the consequences for non-performance and the non-delivery of service?” asked Ms Gossmann.

The EXPRESS forwarded an enquiry to the CoJ. At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
