Feast of water polo at Jeppe Boys

JEPPE – Stuart Short, the son of the late Ken Short was at the school on Sunday to watch the games and present the prizes.

Jeppe High School for Boys hosted the 21st annual u-14 Ken Short Shield Water Polo Tournament from March 2 to 4.

St John’s College beat Rondebosch in the final to win the tournament.

Parents, family and friends came out in numbers to support the teams.

The event attracted u-14 teams from high schools across the country.

The 20 participating schools were St John’s, Rondebosch, Bishops, Reddam House Constantia, South African College Schools (SACS), St Stithians, St David’s, Jeppe, Selborne, King Edward VII School (KES), Grey College, Maritzburg College, St Alban’s, Durban High School, St Benedict’s College, Pretoria Boys’ High, Westville, Parktown, Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies) and Glenwood.

Athly Jarvis from Jeppe said the teams from provinces outside of Gauteng were hosted in the Jeppe boarding houses, which created a festive atmosphere as boys from different schools made friends in and out of the water.

“It was, as usual, a tournament of a very high standard,” Jarvis said. “We would like to thank the schools’ water polo coaches, staff, parents and a host of Jeppe boys who volunteered their time over what was a very long weekend.”

“The Jeppe u-14A team did very well to come second in their group after Reddam House. They then lost to Bishops in a hard-fought quarterfinal and went down narrowly to St David’s in the seventh place play-off.”
