Rugby pumps through Chinedu’s veins

"It doesn’t matter what sport or activity you do; always put your heart into it."

Matric pupil at Queens High School Chinedu Joseph (18) qualified to take part in the NWU-Puk Invitational Series during rugby trials in June this year.

He was very excited when he found out he had qualified.

“I cannot put the emotion into words – excitement, happiness, pride, amazement, shock, gratefulness, appreciation and any other possible positive feeling you can imagine,” said Chinedu.

“He had to do trials to qualify through the Lions. When playing in the NWU-Puk Invitational Series a scout from the Sharks Academy saw him. He is passionate about his rugby and anyone watching him can see his passion and pure talent,” said his educator at Queens High School, Ms Jacqueline Carter.

“I picked up a rugby ball for the first time in 2012 when I was in grade 8. The first rugby team that year convinced me to play. Rugby pumps through my veins now,” said Chinedu.

From his grade 8 year onwards it was just a whirlwind of great achievements for him.

“A year has not gone by where Chinedu has not had commendable achievements. He makes rugby look easy and as a result many of the Queens High rugby players look up to him,” said Ms Carter.

“He is supportive and strong as captain of the first team this year and this can be seen in how well he works with other athletes. Chinedu is also very passionate about his participation in other extra murals such as athletics, swimming, drama and dancing. He truly is an all-round achiever,” said Ms Carter.

“I have not decided what I want to study after matric. At the moment there are many things I would like to study but it will have to be hospitality, sports management, tourism marketing or event management. I am very grateful that God put people into positions where they could help guide, encourage and support me in all of my endeavours,” said Chinedu.

Chinedu’s advice to anyone who would like to achieve in any field is: “It doesn’t matter what sport or activity you do; always put your heart into it, stay focused and keep praying.”
