Lace up those shoes and make a difference virtually

“Community members should not think of the cost as an entrance fee but rather an investment back into the community.”

Community members hoping to make a difference in the lives of others can do so by lacing up their running shoes and joining the virtual Edenvale Marathon before the end of April.

Despite being virtual because of Covid-19 regulations, this year the marathon hosted by the Rand Road Warriors aims to raise funds for NPO Tree of Hope, the marathon’s main beneficiary.

Race organiser and chairperson of the club Sharon Holton said the organisation was affected by Covid-19 and requires assistance.
Every year the funds raised by the marathon are reinvested into the town as donations to various organisations.

Last year the marathon had over 5 000 entries and was able to give back R348 000 to various organisations in the community.

Holton said this year there will not be prize money. However, there are 30 lucky draw prizes up for grabs for entrants.
“The lucky draw prizes, which are all unique, and have been made up from donations from our sponsors are valued between R100 and R1 000.
“The normal routes have been marked, but participants can run anywhere at any time so long as they do so safely and obey all Covid-19 protocols,” explained Holton.

“Once they complete their distance the runners must upload their information to Strava.”

She said for more information those interested can visit the club’s Facebook page.
“Community members should not think of the cost as an entrance fee but rather an investment back into the community.”
Holton said all participants who finish their relevant distance will be emailed a finishers certificate.
