Bedfordview tennis players urged to keep their eye on the ball

Tennis coaches urged players to remain focused on the sport by continuing with their training.

Duane Armstrong from Armstrong Tennis Academy out of the Italian Tennis Club in Bedfordview is certified with the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA) and registered with Tennis South Africa (TSA).

Armstrong has promoted tennis in several countries and coached many top players over the past 28 years.

“Players want to get into the open air and continue learning the skill that they have been working on so hard for years.”

Exercise and being fit is important for a healthy life, according to Armstrong, and young players need to continue with training.

He said tennis tournaments have been placed on hold and it might be a while before it resumes again.
“In the meantime, players can work hard on their fitness and tennis so they are in-form and ready to compete, improve their ranking and work on their personal goals,” said Armstrong.

He described his own personal goal as having many more players play tennis and to develop top tennis players as he already supports his players countrywide at tournaments to achieve great results.

“Every player has different personalities, strengths and weaknesses and needs individual training and guidance. I aim to develop each player accordingly.”

According to Armstrong, certain players will be rusty and out of training after the lockdown and will need help getting their tennis in top shape.
“We will offer all players up to the age of 18 in the community one private lesson and one squad lesson for free,” said Armstrong.

He added this applies to any player at any level or age.
“I would like to help as many players to train and reach their potential and give players a head start recovery from the lockdown.”

He said the academy is following strict Covid-19 rules and guidelines from TSA and government for the safety of all the players and coaches.
“All tennis coaches have to be registered with TSA. They will issue a Covid-19 permit on a monthly basis to all registered coaches,” said Armstrong.

The academy and ProKennex sponsor equipment to players and coaches in Soweto and Atteridgeville tennis stadiums.

The Armstrong Tennis Academy will have an open day at the Italian Tennis Club on July 4 from 12 noon to 1.30pm where there will be a meeting of coaches, fun games and bookings of free lessons and squads.
