Owethu has what it takes to succeed on the soccier field

In 2018, he joined Transition Football where he was chosen to represent the club at a soccer clinic in Germany. However, it was postponed due the Covid-19 pandemic.

Greenstone resident Owethu Shongwe (15) has been selected for a soccer clinic in Germany and sees this as one of many stepping stones to fulfilling his dream of becoming a professional soccer player.

Owethu is a Grade Nine learner at The Kings School in Linbro Park where he is already a soccer star and added this great achievement through playing for Transition Football Club.

“Playing for my school is extremely fun and exciting as well. I get to play the sport I love with my friends, and even though its school soccer, we still give it our all as we represent the school,” said Owethu.

“Playing for Transition Football Club is filled with opportunities to travel around the world, which I am extremely grateful for,” said Owethu.

During active playing seasons, Owethu said he trains about three times a week for school and his club.

“Over the weekends, I usually do some training myself as well,” said Owethu.

“I believe I have all of the traits needed to be a good player. I definitely see a future in soccer and have made it one of my goals in life,” said Owethu.

He has won player of the year awards at his school and his club.

He credits the sport for also teaching him patience and working hard for what he wants in life.

“The only way I’m going to get to where I want to be is by working harder than the next player,” said Owethu.
