SA champ attends VLCC fund-raiser

“He told some humorous stories about his experiences in canoe racing from local to international situations which kept the crowd chuckling.”

Canoeists from Bedfordview and Edenvale were among some of those who showed their support at Victoria Lake Canoe Club’s recent fund-raiser.

The dinner fund-raiser hosted by the club was held for less privileged development community paddlers.

Guest speaker at the event was Andy Birkett who won the South African Marathon Championships K1 and K2 races held between June 15 and June 19.

Following his success Andy will represent SA later this year at the International Canoe Federation World Marathon Championships.

Andy donated the paddles that he used in the SA champs, duly signed and personalised, as an auction piece for the fund-raising.

Andy Birkett, World Marathon Canoe Champion and recent winner of the South African Marathon Championships spoke at a fund-raising event held by the Victoria Lake Canoe Club. He can be seen holding one of the paddles he used during the SA champs which was donated to the fund-raiser to be auctioned off.
