Khabonina takes AfroYoga to Hong Kong

"The programme is going to take place during the last week of Africa Month, where I will be going to different schools in different areas in Hong Kong, teaching people AfroYoga."

In celebration of Africa Month (May), award-winning actress, fitness and wellness coach and choreographer Khabonina Qubeka is set to go to Hong Kong, where she will be running an AfroYoga Dance programme.

The Bedfordview fitness enthusiast said the programme was launched last year during the Nelson Mandela Centenary at the City University of Hong Kong, where she also received an award for her initiative from YogaRaj and City University.

“Last year’s programme was a huge success, so I was invited back. The programme is going to take place during the last week of Africa Month, where I will be going to different schools in different areas in Hong Kong, teaching people AfroYoga.”

For Khabonina this was something that has been in the pipeline for a while and she’s excited to share her African roots with the rest of the world.

“Among many other things, I am an AfroFusion dance teacher and a graduated choreographer. When I introduced yoga to my world, I felt the need to contribute to this beautiful practice and the best way for me was through AfroYoga,” she said.

Khabonina has been running her Dance To Fitness programme, with no signs of slowing down, for over 10 years to not only serve her “curious” body, but to make people feel good about themselves.

With her partner, Vuyisile Colossa, is Bedfordview fitness enthusiast Khabonina Qubeka.

“I have a very curious body. It loves to explore different things, different feelings, and I do not starve my body’s curiosity. So when I bumped into Bikram yoga over eight years ago, in that heated room where one sweats non-stop in all 26 highly challenging postures, my body was ready,” she said.

“I have very specific clients who take my one on one personal training sessions. When they see and feel the difference in themselves then I know my job is done. I have tipped their yoga iceberg because trust me, it’s endless.”

She said her love for yoga further improved her love for health.

“When I realised you don’t have to eat food that doesn’t serve you, I knew this world was for me. My life changed, till today I’m happy my body said goodbye to meat,” she said.

Khabonina said yoga has contributed to the person she is today.

“I’m on a journey of self, through self, by self each day, and yoga has been my light through it all.”

Not only does yoga keep her “sane”, but the new mother also said her daughter makes everything so easy.

“I always say when my daughter was born, I was reborn. She’s making my life so real and solid. It is amazing.”

The new mother said even though her daughter is only seven months old, she can already see she’s going to enjoy yoga when she grows up.

“There’s so much I want her to learn from me because I am already learning a lot from her. I want her to travel the world and learn how to be open and share love with the rest of the world,” said Khabonina.
