Edenvale Marathon a roaring success

Different types of runners were accommodated in the morning fun run which included a 5km, 10km, 21km and 42km route.

Rand Road Warriors (RRW) and StaminoGro hosted their 2019 Edenvale Marathon at Edenvale High School on March 10.

The Sunday race was the 21st edition and took place in the streets of Edenvale.

The men’s 42 km headline marathon was won by Vincent Seng.

Edenglen High School’s Vink Massyn with the first and second team netball girls at the Edenvale Marathon.

The women’s 42km headline marathon was won by Nedbank runner, Cobie Smith, with an impressive time of 02:56:00 beating the standing record by Frith van der Merwe.

The 42km results were automatically sent to Comrades and Two Oceans as potential qualifying times.

Edenvale was abuzz with activity on the morning of the event, and the consideration shown by motorists was commendable.

The JMPD, Edenvale Community Police Forum (ECPF) and other officials directed the traffic and the runners.

Participants were well hydrated along the route with enough water points available and manned by volunteers along different avenues of Edenvale.

The long and short distance routes accommodated different runners.

The routes included 5km, 10km, 21km and 42km stretches.

The Kidney Beanz 5km had an impressive number of children participants who gave the adults a run for their money.

The proceeds of the 5km run were donated to The Kidney Beanz Trust, a non-profit organisation (NPO).

The organisation supports children and their families to deal with life-threatening kidney diseases.

The 10km was more mixed with runners and walkers – and a noticeable number of baby prams.

Precious Mashele won the 10km men’s race.

The 21km and 42 km runs were for the long distance pros.

Winners of these difficult races were tracked on bikes by officials.

The finish line was manned by Edenvale High School volunteers, Mrs Edenvale 2018 and Mrs Mzantzi Ubuntu 2019.

The RRW said despite the early start and busy traffic due to partial road closure, the club was proud of the positive, well-supported marathon in aid of The Kidney Beanz Foundation and the Edenvale Camera Project.

The race organisers thanked the sponsors, service providers, volunteers and the Edenvale public for their contribution towards the event.
