Edenvale trampolinists on a high at Namibia competition

Two local trampolinists represented South Africa in the annual Region 5 international competition for SADC countries.

Two local trampolinists qualified and represented South Africa in the annual Region 5 international competition for Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries.

Ryan Last and Ethan Strydom of the Edenvale-based Gym Masters Gymnasts Club took part in the competition in Walvis Bay, Namibia.

Ryan qualified for the junior male trampoline event and won a bronze medal individually and a silver as part of Team SA.

This was the first time Ryan participated in this competition.

Ethan qualified for the senior male and double mini trampoline events, for which he won gold and silver medals respectively.

This was the second time Ethan participated in this competition.

The two trampolinists, who reside in Edenvale and Kensington respectively, also received Federation Colours for representing the SA Gymnastics Federation.

The pair train at the Highway Gardens Community Centre under Gym Masters coaches Dmitry Demianenko, Michelle Sharples and Alex Demianenko.

In early January, coaches Dmitry and Alex took part in the International Gymnastics Federation’s Academy Level II trampoline coaching course.

The week-long course course was conducted by experts from Portugal, France and South Africa and covered practical teaching sessions as well as theory lectures in anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and psychology.

Dmitry achieved the highest result in the course with 94 per cent, while Alex attained 92 per cent.
