“I never knew what bowls was. I saw an article in the EXPRESS inviting youngsters to come and participate in a programme at Rhodes Park Bowling Club. I became interested and wanted to know more, so I decided to go and check it out.”

When it was explained to Sbusiso he thought he would not enjoy the sport, but since the first day he has been going every Saturday and Sunday to play and improve his skill.

“I was not sure at first if I would be good at bowls or even enjoy the sport. But after learning how to play I love it and would love to play professionally in the future.”

He said bowls is not the first sport he tried. His first choice was soccer but he lost interest.

“Soccer is always the first option even at school,” said Sbusiso. “Joining the bowls programme was an opportunity to try something new, and I love it. The sport teaches you a lot because you need to be patient and focus. When I play I control the green.”

Rhodes Park member Terry Wilson said Sbusiso has talent and can go far in the sport.

“When he came in the first time, I thought he will lose interest,” Wilson explained. “But he came back every Saturday and also started coming in on Sundays. That is when I knew that he was committed.”

Sbusiso is now a club member and growing in the sport.

“He is committed to the sport, and with no doubt he can become the best bowls player,” Wilson said. “He has the passion for it.”

Sbusiso said people think bowls is a sport for elderly people, which is not true.

“Bowls is not for elderly people only – it’s for everyone. You can play as a family from as young as four until you are 95. I would like to invite young people to come and learn how to play.”

Sbusiso is happy that he joined the bowls development programme.

“I’m glad I read that article in the paper because I would have never had an opportunity to play bowls. I love playing and only hope to grow from the sport. I would love to see myself compete provincial,” Sbusiso concluded.
