Youngsters tee off at Glendower

“We hope to swell the ranks of South African golfers.”

Thirty young golfers were given the opportunity to better their skills at a golf clinic held at Glendower Golf Club recently.

The clinic was part of the City of Ekurhuleni’s legacy projects.

Metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe said the city is working in partnership with Glendower Golf Club and the Sunshine Tour.

“The municipality wanted to have a project which would commemorate the SA Open Golf Championships,” said Gadebe.

Disadvantaged children who had shown an interest in the sport were selected for the clinic.

The children came from nine areas in Ekurhuleni.

After the clinic, 10 of the children were chosen for a development programme.

The 10 golfers will receive lessons at Gavan Levenson’s Golf Academy in 2018.

“With projects like these we hope to swell the ranks of South African golfers,” said Atwell Sijadu, Ekurhuleni’s divisional head of sport and recreation.

Coaches who were invited to take part have received their level one PGA coaching qualifications.

Sijadu hopes by assisting the coaches the number of young golfers will grow.

Many of the coaches at the event said they were excited about the future of the municipality’s project.
