Bedfordview’s Silva is SA Cross Country Champ at 55

Performance squad runner, Donald Mashamaite received his South African colours for the 21,1km half marathon.

Bedfordview Athletics Club runner, Tony Silva, became South Africa’s Cross Country Champion at the age of 55.

The club attracts athletes from both Bedfordview and surrounding Joburg east areas, such as Kensington.

Tony won gold in the 8km men’s master category for ages 55 to 59 in a time of 29:57. He crossed the finish line two minutes before his nearest competitor.

That puts his average speed at 3.44 minutes/km.

The 2017 SA Cross Country Championships were held in Potchefstroom on September 9.

An additional triumph for Bedfordview Athletics Club was when performance squad runner, Donald Mashamaite, received his South African colours for the 21.1km half marathon.

He qualified to take part in the Confederation of African Athletics, Southern Region, Half Marathon Championships in Namibia on September 16.

He finished sixth overall in a time of 1:40.
