Edenvale hosts Gauteng members of the South African u-18 baseball squad

The Edenvale Baseball Diamonds was the host to the Gauteng members of the South African u-18 baseball squad on August 12.

The players were practising for the upcoming u-18 Baseball World Cup.

One of the coaches for the squad and president of the Giant Imps Baseball Club, Dean McKinon, said the team is made up of eight Gauteng players, one from KwaZulu-Natal and 11 from the Western Cape.

He said some of the players were selected from the Edenvale club.

The players practice three times a week and play a game every week in order to work together as a team.

McKinon said practices have been going alright and fitness has been the focus however he hopes to put more attention on strength and agility training.

“I want to put the players under pressure,” elaborated McKinon.

The SA u-18 baseball squad will take part in the international tournament at the beginning of September.

SA will face off against 11 other teams from around the world including some of which are from Italy, the USA, Japan, Australia and Mexico.

The tournament will be held in Canada.
