20 medals for ESP swimmers

"Every swimmer swam to the best of their ability resulting in the club finishing fourth overall,"

ESP swimmers from Edenvale competed at the second Ekurhuleni District Winter Short Course Championship.

27 swimming clubs participated in the championship.

Throughout winter ESP was hard at work training for the championships.

“Every swimmer swam to the best of their ability resulting in the club finishing fourth overall,” said Sam Burgess, secretary of Aquatic Academy Swimming Club and ESP Aquatics.

ESP swimmers won three gold medals, eight silver medals, and nine bronze medals

The points were scored in the 74 final events that the swimmers qualified for.

Only finalists in the top eight score points for the club.

The Ekurhuleni short water championship was held over two days.

All the events are swum in heats which precede the finals.

Burgess said finalists are selected from the top eight times. Unfit swimmers struggled by the second day.

Because of the length of the championship, training is essential, both mentally and physically.

Besides the training prior the championships, warming up and cooling down before and after races play a role on the swimmer’s performance.

Swimming 10 events a day can easily add up the mileage, averaging about three kilometres per swimmer on each day.

Some of the top results for the club were:

• Kyle McKenzie swam 10 finals and received three gold, six silver and one bronze medal.

• Caitlin Heuer swam eight finals and was awarded two silver and two bronze medals.

• Nicholas Smith swam eight finals and walked away with two bronze medals.

• Mikayla Pon swam six finals and received two bronze medals.

• Kent Field swam 10 finals and was given one bronze medal.

• Ashley Corns swam two finals and was awarded one bronze medal.

At the championship, the swimmers wore the new club uniform.
