Stay safe while training

SANDTON – ADT has released some security tips for people training for big marathons or cycling events.

Safety should be part of any training plan for individuals who are preparing for big events such as the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the Two Oceans Marathon or any of the parkrun events happening across the country.

This according to Theunis Kotze, general manager ADT Inland Region who said, “Our roads are very busy this time of year with cyclists and runners making use of the favourable weather conditions to get into shape. My wish is that every single person is able to enjoy their workout in safety.”

A very good place to start with one’s safety routine, he said, was by making sure another person is aware of the route you will be taking and your expected time of return. In this way, they can quickly raise the alarm in case something goes wrong.

“Visibility is another very important aspect. Wearing reflective clothing ensures you are visible to other road users,” said Kotze.

There is safety in numbers. Kotze recommends strongly against running or cycling alone but rather to join a group of people who can look out for your safety and also offer encouragement along the way when the muscles get too sore.

Kotze recommended the following tips:

“Cycling groups such as the Pedal Power Association have put together very important safe cycling tips. Take a look at their website www.pedalpower.org.za for advice,” Kotze concluded.
