A sporting success

JOHANNESBURG – A matric pupil is running his way up the success ladder with no sign of slowing down.

Chinedu Joseph, a matric pupil at Queens High School, was awarded two medals after competing in the recent Prestige Athletics event.

He received a silver medal for the 100-metre race and a gold medal for the 200-metre race.

“I was really happy and excited. A part of me was filled with tears of joy. I am really thankful,” said Joseph.

The pupil said he started participating in sports from a young age. “I picked up a rugby ball for the first time in 2012 when I was in Grade 8. The first rugby team [for] that year convinced me to play.”

Joseph has received numerous sporting achievements since Grade 8 and is not set on stopping anytime soon.

“A year has not gone by where Chinedu has not had commendable achievements. He makes rugby look easy and as a result, many of the Queens High rugby players look up to him,” said Jacky Carter, the school’s councillor.

“I chose athletics because I love doing sports. Athletics is one of the sports that I am passionate about. It helps me with the conditioning that I need for rugby,” said Joseph.

With matric examinations almost over and his school years coming to a close, this athletics star wants to study sports management next year.

“I want to become a professional rugby player,” he concluded.
