MEC Mazibuko congratulates Sundowns, wishes Tovey well

JOBURG – MEC Faith Mazibuko has congratulated Sundowns for their convincing win over Zamalek and also wished Neil Tovey well.

Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Faith Mazibuko, has added her voice in congratulating Mamelodi Sundowns on their Confederation African Football (Caf) Champions League finals first leg 3–0 win over Egyptian giants, Zamalek.

Downs won the first leg of the two-legged final played at the Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, outside Pretoria. The second leg is scheduled for 23 October in Alexandria in Egypt.

“On behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government, I would like to congratulate ‘Masandawana’ for making South Africa proud by convincingly winning their home game of the two-legged final against a very powerful Zamalek team,” Mazibuko said.

“By doing so they already have one hand on the trophy and all they have to do now is go out there and finish the job in Alexandria on Sunday [23 October].”

She said everybody knew it was going to be tough in Egypt, but urged the players to just stay focused. “I would also like to thank all South Africans who rallied behind the team on Saturday, especially those who went out there and filled and painted Lucas Moripe Stadium in yellow.”

Meanwhile, the MEC has wished former Bafana Bafana captain Neil Tovey a speedy recovery after he suffered yet another heart attack. “We trust he will pass through this challenge once again like he has done before. Let’s all unite and pray for his speedy recovery, more so when our football is beginning to show signs of improvement,” concluded Mazibuko.

Tovey, who is currently the technical director of the South African Football Association (Safa) and a former Kaizer Chiefs player, was admitted to a Durban hospital over the weekend.
