Modder FC grooming young players

It is a known fact that many of the great footballers in the world have one thing in common, they all started young.

Many of the great footballers in the world have one thing in common: they all started young.

The Modder Football Club, which was launched in 2012 by chairman and coach, Lee Carter is giving a head start to many young players in Modderfontein and surrounding areas.

When Lee started Modder FC, he realised the area needed something to keep the youngsters occupied but the club is doing more than that as many young players have found a home in the club.

One of the Modder FC players, Christephor Elston who plays for the U/10 team joined the team last year after his friends told him it was a good football club.

Christephor does not only play soccer but also plays and enjoys a lot of other sports like cricket, tennis and rugby. He said being part of the team has changed his mindset and improved his skills. “I feel I have become more positive and my skill has also improved since I joined the team,” said Christephor.

He believes that clubs like Modder FC are crucial in developing players that will represent the country in future.

“We need more clubs like Modder FC to develop more young players for the future,” he said.

The youngster lives in Edenvale and attends Hurlyvale Primary School.

Janine van Wyk, Banyana Banyana player and JVW Academy player, and Cristiano Ronaldo are his favourite players because of the skills they possess as well as their positive outlook.

Christephor said more needed to be done in order to get the country’s soccer standard to that of international level.

“I don’t think South African players spend enough time playing together because the more time they spend together, the better they will understand each other and play better as a team. That is why better development clubs like Modders are important,” he said.

Another young player who also plays for Modder FC is Tye Vosloo, who plays for the club’s U/9 team.

Tye joined Modder FC when he was six years old because he wanted to become a better football player.

Tye, unlike his club-mate Christephor, has chosen to play only soccer. “I chose football because it’s so much fun for me as compared to other sports. I have become a much better player since I joined the club. I started as a goalkeeper and now I’m a striker. I have learnt a lot since I joined Modder FC, controlling the ball, head down, foot skills and I love the team spirit,”he said.

Like Christephor, Tye lives in Edenvale and goes to Hurlyvale Primary School.

“My favourite football player is Kun Aguero from Manchester City because he has lots of skills and scores lots of goals,”he said.

He sees himself playing for SuperSport in the future.
