Runners flock to parkrun

The parkrun which began on April 23 is a free weekly event that takes place every Saturday.

Over 900 runners attended the Gillooly’s Parkrun which was held on August 27 at Gillooly’s Farm.

Out of the 905 runners from 28 different athletics clubs, 149 of the participants were first time runners taking part in the Gillooly’s Parkrun, while 224 recorded new personal bests.

The men who placed in the top three were:

  •  Clinton Smythe, a participant from Jeppe Quondam Athletic Club, came first with 19:12.
  •  Nicholas Roux from Klerksdorp Marathon Club placed second with 19:18.
  •  Christiaan van den Heever, whose time was 19:48, came third; he is from Lilly Athletics Club.

The top three women participants were:

  •  Janica Oberholzer, who was the first woman to cross the line with a final time of 23:50, came 36th overall.
  •  Second place went to Jo-Anne Buchner of Team Vitality whose final time was 24:10, she came 43rd overall.
  •  Sarah Roffe from SA Orienteers came third with a time of 24:16, Roffe’s overall placing was 44th.

In the annual points competition the top man and woman were Bradley Oakley-Brown, who has 1117 points and Ms Heidi Williams-Sutton who has a total of 1854 points.

The following runners recorded the best Age Grade scores:

  •  Vernon le Roux was graded 71.88% for the time 20:02.
  •  Anthony Rausch was graded 70.67% after completing the parkrun with a time of 22:54.
  •  Wayne Holmes was graded 69.92% for the time 22:10.
