The Janine Van Wyk (JVW) FC first team made history on August 21 when they beat Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies 2-1 in a thrilling Sasol League encounter.

JVW opened the scoreline after a great run down the left wing by Gabriela Salgado, who shot the ball past Sundowns goalkeeper Andile Dlamini. Sundowns scored within minutes of JVW’s first goal and the scores were level at the half-time break.

JVW continued to put pressure on the Sundowns players in the second half and scored their second goal from a set piece taken by skipper Janine van Wyk, which put the team back in the lead. Marques almost had another great scoring opportunity but unfortunately her shot was saved by the crossbar.

“We are absolutely delighted with the win, our first ever over Mamelodi Sundowns. This makes the race to the title so much more exciting. I am so proud of the ladies, they played their hearts out for the full 90 minutes and of course the victory was well deserved for their tremendous efforts,”said team manager, Ms Lauren Duncan.
