Panthers take home trophy

"He pulled the team together and told them to ignore the Meyerton fans and play the game as professionals."

The Edenvale Panthers Rugby Club won the 2016 Kestrel Valke Rugby League.

On August 13, the Panthers played the final match of the league against the Meyerton team at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park and won.

According to Wendy Wenbe, the communications manager for the Panthers, in the first few minutes of the match the Meyerton team scored a try.

She said the captain of the Edenvale team, Phil Venter, spoke to the Edenvale team after Meyerton’s try to keep them focussed.

“He pulled the team together and told them to ignore the Meyerton fans and play the game as professionals,” said Wenbe.

The final score was 29-5 to the Panthers.

“We are grateful and blessed with good health and sportsmanship to receive this trophy. I thank all the players, sponsors and fans for the tremendous support through the season,” said Vic de Klerk, the coach of the Panthers.

This is the second year in a row that the Panthers have won the Valke rugby league.
