Representing SA at Taekwon-do champs

Our members really outdid themselves. All I asked of them was to leave their full efforts on the floor no matter the result and they didn’t disappoint.

Members from the Magua Taekwon-Do Club represented Taekwon-Do South Africa at the World Championships held in Brighton, England, from July 27 to 31.

The club is made up of members from various clubs from areas such as Emmarentia, Olivedale, Bryanston, Morningside, Bedfordview, Edenvale, Norwood and Lenasia.

The team’s head coach, Norman Magua said although the tournament did have its highs and its lows he was proud of the team members for their performance in the competition.

Some of the achievements made by the team and identified by Magua included:

r Richard Girvin competing against the Canadian world champion.

r Hugh Thomson winning his match against a Hong Kong participant.

r Trevor Magagula competing in world championships for the first time.

r Tafadzwa Matemera, who competed in the World Champs for the first time and won his match against an American participant.

r Peter Stander, who was awarded a bronze medal in individual breaking senior division.

r Christian Nyakanyaka, who received a bronze medal for sparring in the colour belt division.

r Abigail Daniels, who was awarded gold in her colour belt division.

According to Mr Magua, this year’s championship saw the first-ever special needs division at the World Championships.

“This was truly awe inspiring,” he said.
