New world champ hails from local dojo

The bi-annual World Tournament had over 500 competitors from more than 15 countries.

Five members of the Ballossini KSI Karate Dojo in Dunvegan were selected to represent South Africa at the Kimura Shukokai International (KSI) World Tournament.

The tournament was held in Berlin, Germany, from July 21 to July 23.

Sensei Arturo became the World Champion in the Mens Middleweight Kumite’s fighting division. The final bout was unprecedented as he faced co-instructor and student, Sensei Helder Quebra.

Sensei Giancarlo Ballossini achieved a bronze medal for his individual fighting in the Lightweight division.

Other medal winners from the dojo were Sensei Helder, who obtained a silver medal in the Seniors kata division and Sensei Arturo, who received a bronze medal as part of the unison kata team.

The main event of the tournament was the five men kumite fighting team event.

Sensei Arturo was honoured to be named captain of the team and, along with Giancarlo Ballossini, South Africa managed to win the men’s team competition.

In total, the Dunvegan dojo obtained three gold, two silver and two bronze medals.
